April is safe digging month in Alabama
As the spring arrives, Alabamians are reminded to contact 811 at least two days before beginning outdoor digging projects. The Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC) has designated April as “811 Safe Digging Month,” emphasizing the importance of this free service to prevent damage to underground utility lines, which could lead to injuries and service disruptions.
Whether it’s planting a tree, installing a fence or adding a deck, homeowners and contractors are required by law to notify 811 before beginning any excavation. Once notified, utility companies will send representatives to mark underground lines with paint and flags, helping to prevent accidental damage.
Hartselle Utilities general manager Ty Chancelor emphasized the importance of safe digging practices for area residents. “As the spring season arrives, digging projects are gearing up once again. Safe Digging Month serves as a reminder to our customers and contractors about the proper precautions to take, whether you’re installing a mailbox or undertaking a major excavation project,” Chancellor said. “Calling 811 before you dig can make all the difference. Our team at Hartselle Utilities reviews every request promptly to ensure our customers can dig safely. No matter the size of the project, a simple call to 811 can save lives.”
