Spring’s wonderful lesson
The other day I walked out into my backyard to look at my various vines and trees. The blackberry bushes were putting out new leaves, the blueberry bush was putting on buds, and the plum, fig, and peach trees were also showing signs of waking up from their winter slumber. My grape vine has not shown signs of life yet, but I’m very hopeful that it will suddenly put forth new leaves and tendrils. I just love the start of Springtime.
I’ve seen redbuds blooming, and the dogwoods will not be far behind, but these are not just pretty signs of spring to me, they are the signs of great fishing in the near future as bass and bream move towards more shallow waters. The w a r m e r , sunny days remind me that in a few weeks, it will be time to open the pool, plant my garden, and set out new plants my wife has acquired for our yard. Soon, our yard will transform from the seemingly deadness of grass and plants to an explosion of color and greenness.
Spring is a time of regeneration, of growth, and renewal, but also of transformation. It is a reminder that our great God has given us various seasons to enjoy, but the springtime especially, for it brings the message of God’s power to bring forth life, to offer hope, and to do the miraculous work of transformation. The preacher wrote in the book Song of Solomon, “See, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come.” Maybe you are in the season of winter in your life for some reason. It seems your world is devoid of life, of joy, and of hope. Yet, the God who made springtime be the time of rebirth and renewal can make the season of spring happen in your life as well. It is not by accident that the Lord chose springtime, beginning thousands of years ago and continuing to the present, as a time to observe the feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, and First fruits. It not only celebrated the end of winter, but pointed to a time when the ultimate transformation of life would take place in the person of Jesus, who was crucified on Passover, entombed during Unleavened Bread, and rose on First fruits (now called Easter for Christians). Because He lives, we can live and experience transformation, hope, and joy beyond our circumstances. Enjoy your spring!
