Little Free Libraries bring joy to Falkville
In an ongoing effort to share the love of reading with all ages, Little Free Libraries in Falkville are spreading joy to locals and travelers alike.
For the past four years, the Little Free Library at Joe Summerford Park has served as a beloved resource for children and adults, offering the chance to grab a book and leave one in return. This unit has mainly catered to younger readers, according to Falkville library director Jennifer Asherbranner, but books for all ages are available, making it a go-to spot for anyone looking to pick up a story. Two new Little Free Libraries were recently added to the town, Ash-erbranner said, continuing the effort to encourage reading and sharing throughout the community. The first of the new additions, located behind the Love’s truck stop, was installed in December. This unit has seen remarkable success, especially among the truck drivers who frequent the area, she added. Employees at Love’s have expressed gratitude for the addition, noting that the truckers enjoy having a place to pick up a book while taking a break.
A third Little Free Library was placed in the pavilion behind the Falkville Public Library, near the town hall, earlier this month. While it hasn’t yet garnered the same level of traffic as its predecessors, Asherbranner said she is hopeful that word will spread, and more visitors will take advantage of this new resource.
The Falkville Public Library has been actively promoting the Little Free Libraries on their Facebook page, as well as informing visitors about the units when they come to the library. Volunteers ensure that the libraries are well-maintained, stocked with books in good condition, and that all units are functioning properly.
For those who wish to donate books to any of the Little Free Libraries but find the units are full, donations can be dropped off at the Falkville Public Library at any time. If the library is closed, a depository located on the north side of the building between the Coke box and the train tracks is available for donations.
“We love getting books into the hands of readers, whether they become regular library patrons or are just passing through,” Asherbranner said. “The Little Free Libraries are meant to be a welcoming resource for the entire community.” As the program continues to thrive, organizers are open to suggestions from the public for new locations and encourage anyone with questions to reach out at 256-7845822. The Falkville Little Free Libraries remain a free and accessible service for all to enjoy.
