“The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” By Kim Michele Richardson This is historical fiction based on true events surrounding the Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky in the 1930s and the Blue People of the Appalachian Mountains. Cussy Carter is said to be the last of the blue people. That didn’t make her feel special. People around her parts treated anyone different from them as subhuman. Nevertheless, she got a job as a Book Woman in the Pack Horse Library. Troublesome Creek is a poor community where the poorest among them are fighting starvation. Her patrons have grown to trust her and look forward to her visit because it means more books and magazines they could never afford to buy. But not everyone enjoys her presence. Some want to study her in order to change her and some just want to hurt her. Cussy finds a way to trade what they want for something her patrons need, but will she be able to help them before they are lost?
