Winter weather advisory: Snow and cold in local forecast
The National Weather Service in Huntsville issued a winter weather advisory Monday for all of north Alabama and is forecasting cold temperatures through the week with the possibility of snow late Thursday into Saturday morning in north Alabama.
The winter weather advisory extends through 7 p.m. Monday for north Alabama and southern Tennessee due to the possibility of minor snow accumulations (up to 1 inch) and hazardous road conditions due to lingering freezing rain.
While monitoring possible flurries Monday, meteorologist Ashley Ravenscrast said there is another even stronger system coming through as we head into Thursday night.
“We are fairly confident we are at least going to see some light snow from this event,” she said. Officials are forecasting 1 to 2 inches from late Thursday into Saturday morning, she said.
“Probably the heaviest snow is coming Friday and lingering into Friday night into Saturday morning,” she said. “So, we do expect some travel issues potentially being as early as late Thursday but lingering through Friday and potentially into the weekend as well. The main concern is the travel impact. Right now, we have 2 inches in the forecast and that is enough to make the roads a mess.”
“North Alabama should see lows in the teens to lower 20s and high in the 30s consistently throughout the week, and wind chills will be really cold, too,” Ravenscrast said.
