Crestline students participate in Christmas themed STEM lesson
Crestline students were excited for their December STEM challenge: designing a parachute to help Santa Claus land safely. Students put their minds to the test, stretching their creativity and problemsolving skills. The materials provided included coffee filters or tablecloth pieces, fishing line, yarn, pennies, napkins, tissue paper, tape and Dixie cups. Key focus words were gravity, drag, mass and friction.
The goal was clear-help Santa land safely without ending up on the naughty list. The challenge was to make the parachute slow down Santa’s descent as much as possible, ensuring the softest, slowest landing. Students experimented with different materials to see which ones would create the safest, slowest fall.
This activity required critical thinking, collaboration, and trial and error, all of which are vital skills in STEM.
