UPDATE: Morgan sheriff IDs man killed by deputy after exchange of gunfire
An attempted traffic stop Monday led to a chase, an exchange of gunfire and the fatal shooting of the driver by law enforcement, according to the Sheriff’s Office and Priceville police.
No law enforcement officers were injured, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified the man who was killed as Drew Patterson Banks, 41, of Decatur.
The traffic stop of a vehicle that had been reported as stolen was initiated by Priceville police, but the vehicle fled and was chased by multiple agencies along Alabama 67, Interstate 65 and I-565 before returning to Morgan County, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“During the pursuit, the subject waved a firearm numerous times. The vehicle made contact with a Sheriff’s Office patrol unit and eventually stopped on (Thompson Road at Byrd Road in Hartselle) where the subject shot at deputies and officers, who returned fire,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its statement.
Priceville police said the driver was declared dead at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office said the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was notified of the shooting and has dispatched investigators to process the scene.
