Lady Tigers defeat Mountain Brook, Briarwood Christian

The Lady Tigers bounced back from a disappointing loss to Mortimer Jordan to start the week with wins over Briarwood Christian and Mountain Brook.
“The week didn’t start the way we wanted it to with the loss to Mortimer Jordan,” coach Amber Deline said. “However, the girls went to work to fix what went wrong and picked up two good wins over Briarwood and Mountain Brook to close out the week.” Hartselle 64, Mountain Brook 52 In another matchup between two of the top teams in Alabama, the Lady Tigers broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to defeat Mountain Brook 64-52 to improve to 10-2 this season.
Hartselle took a first quarter lead of 14-9 before the Lady Spartans battled back to take a 29-26 lead into halftime.
Mountain Brook continued to pull away with a 10-2 run to open the third quarter and extend their lead to 39-28 midway through the third. The Lady Tigers closed out the quarter on an 18-6 run to take a 46-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The defense kept the pressure on the Lady Spartans, holding them to just seven points in the final eight minutes, while the offense scored 18 to get the 64-52 win, Hannah Burks finished with 29 points to lead Hartselle. Mary Frances Itsede finished with a double-double, 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Anna Hampton Burroughs had 15 points and five rebounds.
Hartselle 40, Briarwood Christian 11 The Lady Tigers opened the game on a 14-0 run and cruised to a 40-11 win over visiting Briarwood Christian.
The Hartselle defense held the Lady Lions to six points in the first quarter, three in the second and just two in the second half. They forced 32 turnovers with 21 coming by steals.
Burks finished with 20 points and five steals to lead the Lady Tigers. Burroughs added nine points and six steals. Ella Springer had five steals.
Mortimer Jordan 56, Hartselle 48 In a battle between two of the better teams in North Alabama, the visiting Lady Blue Devils came out on top in a 56-48 win. Mortimer Jordan jumped out to a 13-9 first quarter lead before extending the lead to 24-16 heading into halftime.
The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 24-22. The Lady Blue Devils responded with a 16-4 run to close out the quarter and take a 40-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Mortimer Jordan lead grew to 19 points, 49-30, before Hartselle closed the game with an 18-7 run to make the final score 56-48.
Burks and Burroughs each finished with 12 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Itsede added 11 points and five rebounds, while Elsie Boyd added 10 points.
