Hartselle Funeral service for Charlie Jones, 95, was held December 5, 2024, at 6:00 PM at Peck Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Charles Shaddix officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
Charlie Jones passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024. He was born April 12, 1929, in Morgan County, to Prince Thomas Jones and Pattie Erin Stephenson Jones. He was a veteran of the United States Army and the Korean War.
Charlie graduated from Decatur High School and Auburn University, where he earned a master’s degree in Fisheries Biology. It was at Auburn that he met Landra Louise Mays, whom he married in 1955. Shortly after, they moved to Liberia, Africa, where they lived for five years in native villages, constructing tilapia ponds to help feed local communities. Upon returning to Decatur, AL, Charlie worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service until 1981, after which he became the Safety Coordinator for the City of Decatur, a position he held until 1997.
Charlie’s true passion remained fishing, but he also had a deep love for the church. He was an active member of the choir for decades and worked with the youth at First Baptist Church. He led the singing for the seniors in Sunday School for many years. In later years, he developed an interest in golf and became a regular on local courses, where he enjoyed competing with both old and new friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pattie Erin Jones and Prince Thomas Jones; his spouse of 58 years, Landra Louise Jones; and his brother, Prince Thomas Jones, Jr.
Survivors include his daughter, Patti Byrd Collier and her husband Bobby; son, Thomas L. Jones and his wife Lori; granddaughter, Autumn C. Rook (who spent many afternoons with her Popee, playing and making snacks) and her husband David; grandsons, Matthew Carroll and his wife Lanta, Michael Carroll, Justin Collier and his partner Randi Knox, and Ries Collier and his wife Katherine; great-grandchildren Riley Carroll, Emory Carroll, Lily Grace Collier, and Richard Collier.
