A graveside funeral service and interment for Charles Murphree, 97, was held November 27, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Roselawn Cemetery with Bro. Richie Thompson officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. No public visitation is scheduled. Mr. Murphree died on Wednesday, November 24, 2024, at his residence. He was born August 11, 1927, in Limestone County, to Bert Murphree and Evie Allean Quinn Murphree. He was an attorney for more than 40 years for Caudell, Harris and Shanks, Attorneys at Law, and also was the Hartselle City Attorney, prior to his retirement. He was a past clerk for the Alabama Supreme Court, Justice Pelham J. Merrill. He also was past president of the Rotary Club of Decatur and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Decatur and served as a deacon. He was a graduate of Morgan County High School, was an avid golfer, loved Alabama Football, enjoyed traveling, and music, especially Irish music. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army and was affectionately known as “Poppy.” Preceding him in death were a son; Charles L. “Chet” Murphree, his parents, two brothers, Bert Murphree and William Murphree and two sisters, Mary Louise Breland and Jane Murphree O’Mary. The family would like to extend a special thanks for the wonderful care from Hospice of the Valley and his caregivers, Paul and David Pointer.
Survivors include his wife, Sue A. Murphree; sons, Atlee Sample Murphree and Van Quinn Murphree; stepsons, James “Jimmy” Moore (Amy), James F. Herring, III “Trey”; daughter, Lila Elizabeth Murphree (Cindy); stepdaughters, Kim Herring Dodd (Tom), Stacy Kwapiszewski, Donna Moore Lee (Victor), Debbie Moore Kennamer (Jay), daughter-in-law, Lisa Graham Murphree; 16 grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Tucker Anderson Dodd, Carson Kwapiszewski, Conner Kwapiszewski, Davis Stanford Dodd, Lawson Kennamer, Kell Todd and James Moore III. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harris, Caddell, & Shanks, Attorneys at Law and Dr. John Irle. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Valley and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
