Johnny Mack Shivers
Somerville
Johnny Mack Shivers passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024, following a fall inside his home and complications from surgery. He was well taken care of by the care team at Huntsville Hospital. Unfortunately, years of COPD and neuropathy left his body weak and unable to recover. Johnny was predeceased by his mother and father, John and Mary Shivers. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Martha Hamilton Shivers; brother Larry (Linda) Shivers; children, Carrie Shivers-Mazzei, Kristen (Greg) Tumminello, and John Shivers; and grandchildren Vince Tumminello, Cecilia Tumminello and Adeline Shivers-Mazzei. Johnny grew up in Bessemer, Alabama, where he graduated from Bessemer High School and proceeded to the University of Montevallo (’69) to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in visual art, while playing baseball for the university. After graduating, he became a physical educator for Thompson Middle School, before becoming a transportation manager working for several companies in Central and North Alabama. He completed his career working for Dixie Midwest in Decatur. Johnny loved life, and found pleasure in music, dancing, cooking and gardening. He also enjoyed sports (Roll Tide), horses and other animals, including his beloved dog, Duke. Johnny also greatly enjoyed calling state and federal politicians to inform them of their ignorance and set them straight. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 1-5 p.m. at Quail Creek Resort in Hartselle, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association.
