Are you tuned in?
One of my favorite and prized possession as a boy was my green, pocket sized, transistor radio. I took it to the beach to listen to music, and I went to bed with it to listen to the Atlanta Braves play baseball. The small radio ran on a 9-volt battery and was very portable. Like all radios and televisions at that time, it had an antenna to capture the signals of the broadcasters. However, I had to search for my favorite channels. This required both patience and a good signal. All radios, whether at home, in the car, or in the pocket had dials that had to be carefully turned to the station and required further fine tuning to get the signal just right. A small deviation and another station might bleed into whatever you were listening to, or you might hear a noise called static. Even presets on the car radio required fine tuning to get the signal just right. It got you close, but not always right.
As electronics moved into the digital age, it became easier to capture transmitted signals because the technology allowed for instant and perfect tuning. Today, if I want to hear a certain station, I just hit the preset button or search mode and it goes to a specific channel, even to the sub-channels for great listening.
However, we were made to receive a different kind of signal, and it requires us to intentionally tune in, and sometimes fine tune our receiver to the broadcast of Heaven. It isn’t easy, and requires patience, a good antenna (God’s Word), and a strong signal. I’m speaking of prayer and being in tune with the frequency of God’s will, plan, and purpose for our lives. It is when we are properly tuned in that we can know God, know His perfect will for our lives, and live out that knowledge.
One of my favorite songs to listen to was sung by Ray Stevens and the Statler Brothers. Part of the lyrics says, “Come and listen to a radio station where the mighty hosts of heaven sing.” It further says, “Turn the lights down low and listen to the Master’s radio. Get in touch with God, turn your radio on.” Let’s turn on our spiritual radios and tune in to the Master’s broadcast.
