Blue Devils run over Cold Springs for region win
For the Enquirer
The Falkville Blue Devils clinched the third seed in 2A Region 6 with a 30-12 road win at Cold Springs last week.
“We played well defensively,” coach Seth Ward said. “That’s always a tough task when you know you are only going to get six or seven possessions. Our guys really did a good job of executing the game plan by getting some critical negative plays which led to stops.” The Eagles scored early in the second quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass to take a 6-0 lead. Falkville got a 31-yard touchdown run by Brodie Bennett and then a 4-yard run by Landon Powers to take a 16-6 lead into halftime.
Cold Springs cut the lead to 16-12 with a 9-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 24-12 after Bennett scored on a 19-yard touchdown run late in the third.
Falkville closed out the scoring in the fourth when Powers scored on a 61-yard run to make the final score 30-12.
“We scored on 4-of-7 possessions thanks to our offensive line, who played really well, which led to some big plays and took some pressure off of the defense to just play ball,” Ward said. “Brodie and Denver both ran hard, and we finally busted some big runs, stuff we’ve been so close on all year, we finally finished some of those.” Powers finished with nine car-ries for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Bennett had six carries for 80 yards and two scores. Denver Comstock added 61 yards on 12 carries.
Powers was 4-of-5 passing for 45 yards. Logan Fowler had two receptions for 36 yards.
Landen Horton and Comstack had a team-high 10 tackles, while Eli Harris added six tackles and an interception.
Falkville (5-4, 4-2) closes out the regular season Friday on the road at Winston County.
