Ananias and Sapphira
Halloween is here, and people love a good scare-from haunted houses to scary movies to creative costumes, this season is full of thrills. Even in the Bible, there are stories that can give you chills. Take the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:111-it’s like something out of a horror tale. More than being frightening, though, it’s a sad story because their fate could have been so different.
Ananias and Sapphira wanted to be part of God’s family and saw others selling their possessions and giving everything to support the apostles. They wanted that same image of devotion but weren’t ready to let go of their worldly attachments. Instead, they decided to keep some of their money while pretending to give it all. This choice led to their deaths and, ultimately, the loss of their souls.
What’s tragic is that their story could have had a happier ending. They could have sim ply told the truth. Their story reminds us not to lie and to trust God. Ananias and Sapphira wanted a backup plan, showing a lack of trust that God would provide for them. Lastly, it shows us that our actions have real consequences. By learning from their mistakes, we can avoid a similarly sad ending to our own stories.
