Table talking truth
O ur house has many kinds of tables in it, as does many of your homes. In our house, each table speaks. No, not in a spoken language, but in the universal language of purpose. If you are confused, let me say it this way.
If you walk into our home, you will see to your right, a table with a plant on it. It says, “welcome to our home, we want it to be inviting to you.” As you pass through the living room, there are end tables. They say, “sit down and relax, turn on a lamp, read a good book, enjoy one another’s company, and if you’re thirsty, place a cup on me.” We have a “coffee table” that also invites folks to use it for various things—food, drinks, decorations, and if you are a grandchild, a place to play.
Walk into our kitchen and the round nook table says, “sit here, have food and refreshment. Laugh, talk, and have a good time around me.” Our formal dining table also speaks. I didn’t like what it said when I was young. When I was a kid, the formal dining table at my paternal grandfather’s house said, “Be careful now, I’m the real thing. I’m genuine number one grade wood. Don’t you dare put your elbows on me. Watch that kid! Don’t let him spill anything on me! I’m special.” I just hated that table calling me “kid”. Now that I am an adult, my formal table says, “Invite the whole family over for a meal. Enjoy your time together on me.” You see, tables do talk. My favorite talking table is the Lord’s Supper table. It says, “Remember Me, I gave my body and blood for you.” It also says, “You can be forgiven.” Jesus said, “For this is my blood of the covenant, that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins ” It also says, “Better days are ahead.” Jesus told his disciples that one day they would drink of the vine together in the Father’s kingdom.
What does your tables say in your house? More important, what does the Lord’s table say to you? I hope you hear the Lord remind you of what He did to show you how much He loves you and one day wants you to sit with Him at His table in Heaven.
