Douglas Haynes was born to Herman and Idelle Haynes on April 24, 1935, in Hartselle, Alabama. He passed away October 13, 2024, at the age of 89. He and his family moved to Lubbock in the early 50’s. There, he built a successful career with Piggly Wiggly, met the Love of his Life, Wilda Ann Shockley, and raised a beautiful daughter. After retiring from Piggly Wiggly, he and Ann purchased Bernards Convenience Store, which they ran for 27 years, gaining many cherished memories with customers and friends. After selling the store, but not being one to rest, he began working for Texas Tech University in the Civil Engineering Department, where he worked for 15 years, sharing knowledge with students, learning new skills, and enjoying frequent drop-ins from his granddaughter between classes. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting, and gardening, and would give any stray or injured animal a home. He spent the last several years of his true retirement being “Great-Great” to his greatgranddaughter – poking, prodding, and laughing to no end. He was endlessly proud of his family, shared a boisterous energy with everyone he met, and embodied adventure and strength throughout his life. Doug was preceded in death by his Parents, Sister, Bee, and Brothers, Lonnie, Donny Wayne, and Bobby.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Debra (Greg); granddaughter, Jenni (Levi) and great-granddaughter, Ledgin.
