Balancing faith and culture
During this time of year, the topic of idols often comes up.
Some say that participating in cultural events or holidays is akin to idol worship, which can cause Christians to question whether they’re doing something wrong. After all, Scripture does warn us to avoid idols (1 John 5:21) and to not become idolaters (1 Cor. 10:7).
But where is the line between engaging in cultural traditions and turning those things into idols?
While this may not be an exhaustive guide, here are a few things to consider: Does what you’re doing hinder you from being a light for Jesus? If it pulls your focus away from Him, it may have taken priority over Him. Do these activities cause you to neglect gathering with fel- low believers? If so, they may have become an idol in your life. Think about whether these events keep you from loving others. Sometimes, what we choose to engage in can lead us away from love. Are you ignoring God’s Word to make yourself more comfortable with your choices? When we do this, we begin to drift away from God.
Many things in life can take us down these paths, but a child of God can also participate in various activities while keeping their focus on Him. As long as God remains first (Matthew 6:33), you can engage in cultural practices and still lead others to Christ through your example. Let God guide your choices, and you’ll find it much easier to follow the Bible’s call to flee idolatry (1 Cor. 10:14).
