Annual meeting to celebrate Hubert Mitchell’s legacy
The community is invited to honor the contributions of Hubert Mitchell at the Hartselle Historical Society’s annual meeting Oct. 24. The event will begin with a meal at 5:30 p.m., with a cost of $15 per person, followed by a program celebrating Mitchell’s enduring legacy in Hartselle.
Mitchell played a pivotal role in shaping Hartselle’s growth and development through numerous business and community endeavors, according to the society. Among his contributions, he organized Hartselle’s Chamber of Commerce and, alongside Charles Baker, designed the gazebo next to The Depot — an iconic local landmark.
Mitchell also brought economic growth to the area by establishing Hartselle’s first payroll. He launched a furniture manufacturing business and United Stage, a company specializing in stage curtain manufacturing. His work expanded to include producing pew cushions for churches, with The Methodist Publishing House becoming his largest customer.
Mitchell’s influence on Hartselle extended beyond manufacturing. He built the Ranch Drive-In Theatre and Ranch Café, offering entertainment and dining experiences for locals. He also owned the Rodeo Theatre, formerly known as the Strand Theatre, as well as the Branded Burger Restaurant, where Holy Smoke BBQ is now.
Mitchell’s vision for the community even took flight — literally. He built the Hartselle Airport, leaving yet another lasting mark on the City of Southern Hospitality.
Join the Historical Society for this annual meeting as they celebrate the legacy of Hubert Mitchell, whose entrepreneurial spirit and dedication helped shape Hartselle.
Reservation checks are needed by Oct. 15 and can be mailed to P.O. Box 15, Hartselle or by calling (256) 773-9390 and leaving a message.
