Choosing God
In recent articles, we’ve explored several famous battles from the Bible.
This week, we’ll look at one more – but this one isn’t fought between two people.
It’s a battle of will, heart, and priorities. It’s a battle of one person against themselves. In Genesis 19, we read about Lot’s wife. Lot and his family were the only ones to be saved from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. They were given just a few instructions: leave the city, head straight for the mountains, and don’t look back.
As they fled, we can only imagine the chaos around them – the sounds of destruction, the screams, the temptation to look back. But God had been clear: don’t look back. Yet, in a final moment of weakness, Lot’s wife turned around, disobeying God’s com mand, and was turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).
The question we must ask ourselves in this battle is: why did she look back? Per haps it was the sound of suf fering loved ones, or a desire to help those left behind. But the deeper reason may be that she simply couldn’t let go. Even though God had shown her a new way, a better path, she was still attached to what she was leaving behind. In that moment, she chose fear, attachment to the past, and love of the world over trusting in God’s plan.
When we face similar battles in our own lives – choosing between clinging to the past or trusting in God’s future – we must always choose God. He knows what’s best.
