Gilmore Girls
Well, it’s that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, the temperatures getting cooler, and soon the leaves will begin to change colors and fall. It’s time to get the long sleeves out of the closet and put the shorts and flipflops away.
And it’s time for all the basic girls, and me, to restart watching Gilmore Girls.
I don’t care for pumpkin spice anything and my beard prevents me from needing a scarf. I’ve never cared much for chili, but I’ve also seen This Is Us, so I’m sort of skeptical of Crock Pots anyway.
But I am man enough to say that I enjoy watching Gilmore Girls.
I’m not team Dean, Jess, or Logan; I’m mostly team “Lorelai and Rory need some serious therapy”, but despite their psychosis, they make for good TV.
If I had to pick one favorite character, I’d say it’s probably Luke. Mostly because I can be a crotchety grouch from time to time and I think people drink entirely too much coffee. Though I must admit, I could never wear the same hat for eight years straight.
Emily’s probably a close second. That may be due to contrarian nature, but she had one of my favorite lines ever and when she said, “Cliches are just things we’re tired of being true.” As a man prone to cliche, I appreciate the out that that line gives me.
Mostly I just love the references. The casual mentions of Iran-Contra and Joseph Stalin keep a history nerd like me on my toes. And it reminds me of something a teacher once said; when you’re well read, you’re in on the culture inside joke.
You can enjoy the show without knowing much about the Kennedy’s, but when you know some Presidential history it makes their being referenced all the more comical.
I honestly don’t care who the father of Rory’s baby is and don’t think Lane marrying Zack was some feminist injustice; sometimes folks just marry people, have kids, and don’t do what they thought they would do.
I just like it because it feels like fall. And I’ll never turn down a chance to hear a good Carole King song.
