Danville dominates Tharptown in season opener
For the Enquirer
The Danville Hawks opened the 2024 season with a resounding 68-0 win over visiting Tharptown. The victory was the Hawks first season-opening win since defeating Brewer 12-7 in 2021. The 68-point victory is the largest margin of victory in school history.
“I thought we did what we were supposed to do, especially defensively,” coach Andro Williams said. “Our guys really made it their business to establish the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. It was a great win for our team, school, and community as a whole. It was awesome to finally see our seniors enjoy their last first game of high school football with a dominating win.” Danville quarterback Jace Glenn led the way with two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown in the victory. Colby Reed ran for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Christian Rodriguez added 66 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Collin Cagle had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, while Avery Muhammad added a 29-yard punt return for a score.
The defense shined as they had two sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Matt Tidwell led the Hawks with six unassisted tackles, while John Salvia added six tackles. Landon Hanserd added two sacks, while Cody Barber and Colby Reed each had an interception.
Danville (1-0) travels to Wilson (0-1) on Friday to open region play.
