Priorities
Life is all about priorities. Sometimes those are real ly clear and can be part of a grand plan for one’s life that is well thought out ahead of time, and then there are times when one must prioritize on the fly and make split second decisions.
For instance, sometimes one must choose between two unknown catfish restaurants while driving through an unfamiliar town; there’s not a lot of time to do research, so one must make a swift decision and hope for the best.
Other times you’re at a bookstore and can only afford one book and have to hedge your bets on which is going to be the most worthwhile purchase. Like it or not, sometimes you’ve got to judge a book by its cover.
These then are my life’s greatest struggles; catfish and good books.
Then there are times when you’re like my Daddy. The horse Mama was riding got spooked by some imaginary thing and threw her to the ground and Daddy had milliseconds to make a decision. He could tend to his young wife who, as it turns out, had broken her arm, or he could chase after the horse.
Being a pragmatic man, Daddy did some quick calculations and decided that while Mama was likely to be right where he left her upon his return, that horse was headed for the state line at 45 MPH and had no intentions of looking back. Sometimes things get a little western and you’ve just got to chase a horse.
There are those that would say he misjudged his decision, Mama included, but that’s life, ain’t it? Sometimes you’ve got to just make a decision based on what information you have and hope the gamble pays off.
Of course, that means you’re going to eat some subpar catfish and read some awful books. It also means you might spend forty-some years being laughed at for choosing the horse, but that’s the way it goes. And besides, he got back with the horse before the ambulance could get there, so that’s got to be worth something.
