Self-control: The key to spiritual growth
Last week we explored Galatians 5:19-23, discussing the works of the flesh that God wants us to avoid and the fruits of the Spirit that He wants us to develop. We also considered why God desires this transformation. Today, let’s examine what it takes to achieve this change. I believe the key is the last attribute listed in these verses: self-control. To avoid actions like adultery, fornication, and jealousy, we need self-control. Similarly, developing qualities like love, peace, and joy also requires self-control. This makes self-control crucial, as it underpins all other virtues. In the original Greek, the word is *egkrateia*, mean ing the virtue of mastering one’s desires and passions, especially sensual appe tites. The key to mastering self-control is prioritizing the spiritual life over the flesh. When worldly desires begin to overshadow our good decisions and our relationship with God, we need to quickly regain control. Next time, we will explore practical ways to develop this essential trait.
