Two-year-old Falkville child drowns in pool
By Staff Reports
A two-year-old girl has died after being found in a pool July 1.
Morgan County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Mike Swafford said the incident happened at a home on Gandy’s Cove Road near Falkville.
Morgan deputies and EMS responded to the home just after 6 p.m.
Swafford said lifesaving measures began at the scene until the child could be transported by EMS to Cullman Regional.
According to a statement by Decatur Morgan Hospital-EMS, while transporting the child to the hospital, the ambulance broke down about a quarter of a mile from the emergency room.
Paramedics responded by unloading and moving the child by stretcher to the hospital emergency room on foot while continuing CPR, according to the EMS.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the two-year-old drowning victim from Falkville. While transporting the child to Cullman Regional Medical Center, the transport vehicle broke down about a quarter of a mile from the hospital. Paramedics unloaded and continued on foot with the child on the gurney, while continuing to perform CPR. The cause of the vehicle breakdown is not known at this time.”
Purchased in June with 17,000 miles already on it, EMS officials said the ambulance was serviced before being placed into operation “without any identified issues.”
Morgan County Coroner Jeffrey Chunn said the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“Sadly, the two-year-old did not survive,” the sheriff’s office stated in an update on social media. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all of those that responded to the scene or treated the child.”
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with funeral costs.
As of Friday, the fundraiser had raised more than $18,000 of its $25,000 goal.
