Celebrating a decade of storytelling: 10 years in community journalism
June 30 will mark a sig nificant milestone in my career: a decade of seeing my byline in print. I still remember the first time I saw it and the feeling of immense pride in creating something worth reading. From my early days in East Alabama to my current role in Hartselle, my journey has been a tapestry of rich experiences, each thread woven with the stories of the people and places I’ve come to cherish.
There’s a saying among journalists to which I deeply relate: “Once ink gets in your blood, it’s hard to get out.” For me, it has stayed in my blood these ten years and I doubt it will be removed; a constant reminder of the passion and drive that fuels this profession. Journalism is not just a job; it’s a calling. Every day presents a new story to write, a new person to meet and a fresh opportunity to shed light on the next “above the fold” story.
When I began my career at the Opelika O b s e r v e r , I was a green reporter, eager to make a mark. In many ways I still am. Little did I know that the stories I would cover would leave a lasting impression on me. From chronicling the heartwarming endeavors of friends and neighbors who tirelessly work to better their communities, to the adrenalinefilled moments of covering crime, and even the occasional escapade of loose bears causing a stir in Lee County, each story has been a testament to the dynamic nature of community life.
Transitioning to North Alabama in 2017 brought its own set of adventures. I’ve had the privilege of reporting on everything from municipal elections and city government to human interest stories that appeal to us all.
In this line of work, the people we meet are the true stars. They are the heroes of their own stories, and it is an honor to bring their narratives to light. Whether it’s a local business owner making a difference, a teacher inspiring the next generation or a volunteer dedicating time to a worthy cause, these individuals remind me daily why community journalism is so vital. It is an honor to play a role in shar-ing their stories with the world.
Through the past 10 years, I’ve written countless stories, each with its own unique flavor and significance. These stories are more than just articles in a newspaper; they are chronicles of our collective journey. They capture the essence of our shared experiences, our triumphs and our challenges.
As I reflect on this decade-long journey, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the trust that my readers have placed in me to tell their stories, for the support of my colleagues who share in this mission, and for the endless stream of inspiration that comes from being a part of this community.
Moving forward, I am excited about the stories yet to be told.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives, and for joining me on this incredible journey.
