Sheriff’s Office opens applications for 2024 youth academy

Morgan County students in ninth through eleventh grades are invited to apply for the 2024 Sheriff Youth Academy. This four-day program, running from June 24-27, will offer hands-on experience in various aspects of law enforcement, including drug awareness, traffic stops, K-9 units, S.W.A.T. operations and firearm safety. Participants will also engage in daily physical training and have the opportunity to earn CPR certification.
The inaugural academy will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at several locations in Hartselle and Morgan County including the patrol station, firing range, MCSO and the Morgan County Jail. The event is free of charge, but seating is limited. Lunch and drinks will b e pro vided.
Public informa tion officer Mike Swafford said the goal is to give students an understanding of the role of law enforcement, the Sheriff ‘s Office and the various areas of its operations.
“Several applicants have expressed an interest in Crime Scene Investigations/ forensics and Law Enforcement as a potential career. This will give them valuable insight into those potential career paths,” he added. Swafford said the program is made possible through donations.
