Four high school grads win National Merit scholarships

Staff report

Four graduates of Hartselle High were among 116 Alabama students who won college-financed National Merit scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. June 6.

The scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate work.

Hartselle graduates Brody Boster, Reid Ellis and Eli Moore won scholarships to the University of Alabama. Boster’s probable career field is computer science, with Ellis aiming for a career in pediatrics and Moore pursuing a career in secondary education.

Hartselle grad Jacob Bowling received a scholarship from Auburn University. His probable career field is chemical engineering.

In addition to having a qualifying score on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, scholarship recipients had to have outstanding academic records, be recommended by a school official and submit an essay providing information about extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions.
