Tigers advance to second round over Gadsden City

The Hartselle Tigers’ soccer team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs for just the second time in school history following a 3-1 win over Gadsden City.

Owen Bennich scored one goal and had two assists to lead Hartselle to the comeback win. Luke Vinson and Hunter Lawrence each had a goal.

“The win against Gadsden was big for us,” Hartselle coach Dan Bennich said. “We got down early but fought back and played with intensity. I am proud of our effort. This team has something really special. Every man on the team is dedicated to improving himself and the team.”

Hartselle (21-3-2) will play at 6A No. 1 Fort Payne in the second round.

Hartselle 1, Lawrence County 0

Hartselle closed out the regular season with a 1-0 win over Lawrence County. The win was the Tigers’ 20th win of the season, a new school record.

Quincey Kattes gave the Tigers the only goal needed for the win. Goalie Nick Vaughn and the Hartselle defense did the rest. Vaughn recorded his ninth shutout of the season, a school record, in the win.
