Students at Crestline Elementary School celebrated Earth Day this past Friday with games and stations designed to teach the importance of taking care of the environment.

Because of the ongoing construction of the new Crestline school building, this year’s event was moved indoors, but environmental science teacher Barb Helton said the students “had a blast.”

“This year’s stations included three guest speakers, a game station, a nature charm station, a snack station, a movie station and miscellaneous activities in the classroom,” Helton said.

Guest speakers for the Earth Day celebration included Debbie Smith, a retired teacher, who spoke to the students about the importance of recycling; Allyson Shabel from the Morgan County Extension Office, who spoke about birds, their characteristics and importance to the earth; and Kyle Lybarger, a Hartselle graduate, local forester. Lybarger has the Native Habitat Project on YouTube and social media platforms, and he talked about the importance of native plants in the ecosystem.
