HPD adds two, promotes officer

The Hartselle Police Department is growing in staff members and promoting from within.

At this week’s regular meeting of the Hartselle City Council, two officers joined the department, coming to HPD as certified officers.

Police chief Justin Barley and Mayor Randy Garrison administered oaths of honor and office to officers Britt Parker and Candice Crutchfield at the meeting.

Officer Chuck Porter was also promoted at the meeting held Feb. 28. Porter has been with HPD since Nov. 2019 after a 20-year career with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

HPD has not been immune from the struggles caused by a nationwide shortage of applicants for law enforcement jobs, according to Barley, but the department has not wavered in its dedication to hiring the best.

“We believe it is more important than ever to maintain a very high standard when hiring new officers,” he said. “We are thrilled to add officers Britt Parker and Candice Crutchfield to our team, who are both certified officers with previous experience at other agencies.  We feel like both of these new officers are a great fit for HPD and our community and they will make an immediate impact as soon as they have completed field training.”

Barley also commended Porter upon his promotion to sergeant.

Sgt. Chuck Porter’s wife Amanda pins his new badge.

“Sgt. Porter is heavily involved as a volunteer with the Morgan County Rescue Squad and truly has a servant’s heart for our community.  (He) will be assigned to our patrol division and we are expecting great things from him,” Barley said. “There is no better place to serve than Hartselle; we truly enjoy a quality of life on the job that is very hard to find.  We are still adding to our roster to meet the needs of our growing community.”
