Cartee, Gaines lead Priceville to 28-21 win at Scottsboro

SCOTTSBORO — Mason Cartee gave Priceville a 28-21 lead with his touchdown run with less than a minute remaining in their win on the road at Scottsboro. He then ended the game with an interception in the end zone to secure the victory.

Scottsboro opened the game with a scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead.

Priceville answered with a scoring drive of their own when Jackson Prickett scored on a 12-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.

The Wildcats responded with another scoring drive early in the second quarter to take a 13-7 lead.

The Bulldogs responded with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Prickett to Xander Gaines to take a 14-13 lead into halftime. Mason Cartee scored on a one-yard touchdown run with less than a minute to play Friday as Priceville preserved its perfect start to the season with a 28-21 non-region win over Scottsboro.

After holding Priceville to a punt to start the second half, Scottsboro took a 21-14 lead with a touchdown midway through the third quarter.

The teams traded possession for much of the second half before the Bulldogs used a long drive to tie the game at 21-21 when Gaines scored his second touchdown with 2:28 remaining in the game. The drive started when the Priceville defense forced a Wildcats’ turnover on downs.

Cole McWhorter intercepted a Scottsboro pass on their next possession to give the Bulldogs excellent field possession at the Wildcats’ 26-yard line with 1:30 left.

The win was Priceville’s sixth straight to start the season and 13th consecutive regular-season win.

Cartee finished with 137 yards rushing, a touchdown on offense, and the game-winning interception on defense. Gaines had 83 yards rushing, a touchdown, 17 yards receiving and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs topped 300 yards rushing for the fifth consecutive game.

Priceville (6-0, 3-0) comes home to celebrate homecoming as they welcome St. John Paul II (1-4, 0-3) to Bulldogs Stadium.
