Danville ladies group celebrates first anniversary

By Martha Jackson

Sherry Moriarty Warnick shares her story about her reasons for forming the Danville Ladies Group. Sherry says that being widowed, she remarried a man from Danville and relocated there. She left all of her friends and family and started a new and different life. Sherry says even though she had a church family at Danville, she was the oldest person there. She also says that going through Covid for two years didn’t help matters either. Sherry says, the Bible says, “If you want friends, you must show yourself friendly.” So one year ago, she took a chance and used social media to try and reach lady friends. She also put out an ad to reach out to to her neighbors and community to have a ‘get to know you’ luncheon. Sherry says she didn’t know how many ladies would come, if any, but to her amazement 19 ladies came.  They immediately formed a meeting and had papers of interest to fill out and took ideas and suggestions with them. Thus, the Danville ladies group was formed. The ladies in the group are of all ages, from women in their 20s to 75+. They meet once a month and have two facilities which have been offered to use for their meetings. The group meets at the Liberty paintball pavilions and the Liberty Community Church fellowship hall. Sherry said that they have had some strong friendships develop through the group. The ladies in the Danville group are of all ages, race and background. They don’t get into politics or religion, but lead by love and example. The group has different ladies to host luncheons each month, and they get to choose the place, date, theme and menu and everyone brings food to fit the theme. They do not have dues, but a blessing basket is contributed to help provide items for the outreach program. They have hosted two baby showers for single moms and a surprise baby shower for a middle age mom, who had a unplanned pregnancy.

The group has raised money and helped purchase a new door for Liberty Community Church. They also help the ladies when emergencies arise, with rides, visits etc. Sherry said one of the most heart warming events was when a young mother found her way to their meeting, about 8 months ago or more and shaking came to her and thanked her for calling to remind her to attend the meeting. With tears welling up in her eyes, she said she had strong thoughts of ending her life and that she thought her children would be better off. The ladies covered her in love and reassured her that this was normal for moms to get depressed after their second baby. One of the Danville ladies has sent her positive texts consistently throughout the past year. This young woman went on to finish her education and is away working with computer forensics for the U.S. Airforce. Sherry said all of the Danville group ladies are so very proud of this young woman.  Sherry added a lot of women go through bad patches in their lives and need that special friend or friends to hold us accountable and that women meed women during these times . The Danville ladies group also host crafts and share their talents and knowlege with the group. They have learned about holistic plants, how to decorate a cake, how to be prepared for emergencies and a lot more.  Sherry says that she can’t take credit for the success of the group. She said that she just got the ball rolling and every woman helps and without their help and contributions, suggestions and volunteering, the group could not exist.  Young moms can bring their children or babies and while they don’t have daycare, they all like kids. If anyone needs a ride to the meeting, you can call 706-781-5821 and they will arrange a ride for you. They also have handicapped parking and easy access bathrooms. Sherry says you might even make a new best friend, and she now has several. The October meeting information will be announced on their Facebook page. They will host a benefit singing for baby Simmy Frank at Liberty Community Church Sept. 24 at 6.30 p.m.  If you can’t attend and wish to help go to,  GIVE:GIVESENDGO/SIMON. This child was born without a soft spot and his skull is fused. He needs reconstructive surgery to open his skull so his brain can grow and without this surgery, he will not survive. All contributions will be appreciated by the family.
