Local photographer places in national photography contest

By Staff Reports

Iven Holt was shocked when he saw his photo placed third in the Shutterfest top talent competition. More than a week later, he said it still hasn’t fully hit him.

More than 400 photographers submitted more than 23,000 images to the contest – and out of them all, Holt’s photo of model Violet Deardorff placed third overall.

Shutterfest is what its website calls an unconference and what Holt describes as a ComicCon like atmosphere for photographers.

“It’s held in the old train station in St. Louis and everything is like early 1900s art deco. Every corner around that place is beautiful to take photos,” Holt said. “It’s a place for photographers.”

This is the second year Holt has attended the event he said is full of energy. He attended his first Shutterfest with another local photographer and friend Ray Glenn.

His recent success has rejuvenated Holt’s love for photography. Prior to this year’s conference and his contest win, he said he seriously considered selling his gear and walking away from his art.

Now, he is looking forward to next year in St. Louis when he can attend Shutterfest and continue his journey as an artist.
