What kinds of choices are you making in your life?

By Todd Barrier

When we think about the Bible character Lot, our minds usually go straight to Sodom and Gomorrah. I think when we do that, we short-change Lot’s story.

Lot’s choice of land led to the things that happened to him in Sodom and Gomorrah, but that’s not the end of Lot’s story. If we only remember that part of the story, we define Lot by a choice he made – but in the end, he is actually defined by his reaction to the results of that choice.

Often, we make bad choices that lead to negative results. When we are defined by those choices, the negativity just continues to build in our life. However, if we respond to those choices in a positive way, we can recover and thrive in our relationship with God.

In Genesis 19, when God sends his angels to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot is instructed to leave. God hasn’t given up on Lot, even after a bad choice.

Lot ends up doing what he is told. He is now in recovery mode from the results of his choices.

Lot didn’t give up on God, and neither should we, because God will never give up on us, as long as the breath of life is in us!

So, when you make a choice that has a negative impact, don’t be defined by that; be defined by the way you respond.

When we make choices, we should remember Lot and the lessons his story teaches us. What kinds of choices are you making in your life?
