Lady Blue Devils drop OT decision to Cold Springs in area tournament championship

The Falkville Lady Blue Devils battled with perennial state power Cold Springs for four periods and overtime before falling 63-53 in the 2A Area 13 area tournament championship game. 

Neither team could pull away from the other; the game was close throughout. The teams were tied at 11 following the first quarter, and the Lady Eagles took a 24-21 lead at halftime. 

Cold Springs extended that lead to 37-33 heading to the fourth quarter, but Falkville outscored the Lady Eagles 17-13 in the final quarter to tie the game at 50-50 and force overtime. 

The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Blue Devils 13-3 in the overtime period to get the victory. 

Mackenzie Veal finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Falkville (23-9). Sydnee Fitzgerald added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Ellie Cate Hill had 13 points and eight rebounds. 

Tori West finished with 25 points to lead Cold Springs.  

Falkville 69, Addison 61 

The Falkville Lady Blue Devils set a school record for victories in a season with their 69-61 win over Addison in the first round of the 2A Area 13 tournament. 

The Lady Blue Devils got 10 points from Veal in the first quarter to grab a 21-17 lead. Savannah Fowler added six points. The Lady Bulldogs hit four three-pointers to keep the game close. 

Addison hit three more three-pointers in the second quarter, outscoring Falkville 25-18 to take a 42-39 lead into halftime. 

The Lady Blue Devils stepped up their play defensively and held Addison to eight points in the third quarter. Veal had eight points in the quarter to help Falkville tie the game at 50-50 going to the fourth quarter. 

Fitzgerald and Fowler combined for 16 points in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Blue Devils pull away for the 69-61 win. 

Veal had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead Falkville (23-8) to the 2A Area 13 tournament finals. Fitzgerald finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. She also scored her 1,000th career point.  

Fowler added 14 points, while Hill had nine points, and Ella Wallace added seven. 

Molly Gilbreath and Hadley Batter each finished with 14 points to lead Addison, while Bracie Rodgers added 13 points.
