Falkville donates ball park to Morgan County

The Falkville Town Council has finalized an agreement with the Morgan County Commission to give up a portion of Bobby Brewer Field in return for improvements that will make it desirable as a venue for travel team ball tournaments.

The 11-acre property was declared as surplus at a regular council meeting Feb. 1 and subdivided in two parcels – seven acres for Morgan County Parks & Recreation and four acres retained by Falkville – at a subsequent meeting of the Falkville Planning Commission.

Morgan County Parks and Recreation’s shortterm improvement plans include removing all structures, turf planing and laser grading of all fields, adding SAF coat infield and top dressing, repairing the batting cage and improving the crossway between parks.

Longterm improvements include repairing all fencing and adding permanent restrooms, a concession building and asphalt parking areas.

The park will retain its present name. As with other county parks, all scheduled activities and rentals will go through MCPR.

Ball fields will remain available to the public on a first come, firstserved basis except when closed for scheduled activities or maintenance.

The council also:

annexed a seven-acre tract of property on Highway 55 East, known as Alldredge/Speedway Property.

–ratified the actions of Mayor Ken Winkles for signing agreement with the West MorganEast Lawrence Water and Sewer Authority.

–approved a one-step pay increase for Chrystalynn Beard for refreshing her Spanish language to serve as Falkville’s Spanish translator.

–approved half the purchase cost of an electronic sign for placement in front of the library.

–set Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on zoning for the Alldredge/Speedway Property.
