Priceville’s playoff dreams end with loss to West Limestone

Priceville had one final chance to sew up a spot in the postseason when they traveled to 4A Region 8 champion West Limestone Friday. The Bulldogs, who started the season 5-1 and 3-1 in region play, had lost their previous two games by a total of eight points and needed a victory over the Wildcats to make it back to the playoffs – but that was not to be.

Priceville opened the game with a 64-yard scoring drive that took more than five minutes off the clock. Xander Gaines punched it in from eight yards out to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 6:31 left in the first.

West Limestone scored 27 straight points to build a 27-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs cut the Wildcats’ lead to 27-14 with 9:32 left in the fourth when Wyatt Hurt connected with Joey Lubisco for a 27-yard touchdown pass. The score capped off a 10-play, 80-yard drive that saw Hurt make three passes for 56 yards.

The Wildcats tacked on two more scores to make the final score 41-14 and end the Bulldogs’ dreams of returning to the playoffs.

Priceville finished the game with 279 total yards – 199 rushing and 80 passing. Jerry Burton finished with 102 yards rushing on 18 carries, while Gaines added 46 yards and a score on seven carries.

Hurt completed five passes in 15 attempts for 76 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception. Lubisco had two catches for 44 yards and a score, while Gaines had two for 20 yards.

Priceville (5-4, 3-4)  will close out the season Friday night hosting St. John Paul II (1-8). The Bulldogs defeated the Falcons 43-29 last season.
