Morgan Sheriff warns residents of COVID-19 scammers
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing scam involving fake phone calls and COVID-19.
Residents have reported being contacted by a caller who claims to be from FEMA offering COVID-19 relief, the MCSO posted on its Facebook page. “The caller requests sensitive information such as driver’s license and Social Security numbers and offers $1,000 for every $100 purchased and put on a gift card.”
The post goes on to warn residents that if something “sounds too good to be true, it probably is” and gives tips to help people avoid falling victim to a scam.
Anyone who receives a similar call should hang up the phone and never give out sensitive information.
The MCSO added that reputable entities do not offer gift cards – so if a caller does, it is likely a scammer.
