Priceville opens season with dominating win at Brewer

The Priceville Bulldogs opened their season with a dominating 38-21 win on the road at rival Brewer on Thursday night.

The Patriots jumped out in front on their first drive of the game. They drove 61 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. The touchdown came on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Wyatt Styles with 7:42 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs tied the game on their second possession of the game when quarterback Wyatt Hurt rolled to his left following a bobbled snap and hit a wide-open Tristan Holmes with a pass covering 45 yards.

“I thought after Brewer’s first drive, our defense settled into the game and played well,” said Priceville coach Chris Foster. “We found our footing on offense on our second drive of the game that tied the game.”

Priceville came up with the first turnover of the game on the kickoff when Peyton Fowler recovered the live ball at the Patriots’ 17-yard line. The Bulldogs would capitalize on the turnover on their first play of the series with Jerry Burton scored on a 17-yard run to make the score 14-7.

Priceville extended their lead to 21-7 when Peyton Fowler scored on a 39-yard run with 7:21 left in the second quarter. The run capped off an eight-play, 60-yard drive on which the Bulldogs ran the ball on every play.

On the final play of the first half, Xander Gaines intercepted an errant Styles pass to give the Bulldogs their second turnover of the game.

Following the second-half kickoff, Burton broke off a 63-yard run down the Brewer sideline to extend the Bulldogs lead to 28-7 with 11:41 remaining in the third quarter.

Following the third Brewer turnover of the game, Priceville settled for a JJ Vallejo 38-yard field goal to extend their lead to 31-7.

After stopping Brewer on fourth down, the Bulldogs took over at the 50-yard line. Three plays later, Mason Cartee would score on a 46-yard run to give Priceville a 38-7 lead with 4:00 remaining in the third quarter.

Following the Bulldogs’ 38-point outburst, the Patriots would score twice in the final 4:37 of the game to make the final score 38-21.

The first score came on a Lukas Simpson five-yard run that capped off 13-play, 80-yard drive.

After a Priceville fumble, Brewer went 23 yards in 3 plays with Gonzalo Ramirez scoring from two yards out with 1:35 on the clock to make it 38-21.

Burton finished the game with 163 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Cartee finished with 42 yards and a touchdown on two carries while Fowler had 38 yards and a touchdown on two carries. As a team, Priceville finished with 257 yards rushing on 37 carries.

The Bulldogs’ defense allowed Brewer a total of 189 yards with 103 coming on their final two drives.

“I thought it was a great team win as our offense, defense, and special teams all made big plays tonight,” said Foster.

Priceville (1-0) now prepares for a region match-up at West Morgan (0-2) while Brewer (0-2) will travel to Ardmore (2-0) for a Class 5A, Region 8 match-up on Friday night.
