SCHEDULE SERIES: Patriots look to put past season behind them

The Brewer Patriots come into the 2020 season looking to put the past year behind them. The Patriots had a promising start to the season with two wins, but numerous injuries derailed the season, and the Patriots lost seven of their final eight games to finish 3-7.

Geoff Walters returns for his sixth season as Brewer’s head coach.

The Patriots will be led by junior quarterback Wyatt Styles, who takes over the starting position following the graduation of Patrick Johnson. Styles saw extensive action last year following an injury to Johnson in week four of the season.

Brewer remains in Class 5A Region 8 after initially being moved to Region 7 during the AHSAA reclassification in the fall. The Patriots will be joining Ardmore, East Limestone, Lawrence County, Lee-Huntsville, Mae Jemison and Russellville.

Here’s a look at the 2020 Brewer football schedule:

Aug. 21 at Danville

The Patriots open the 2020 season on the road at Danville. Brewer defeated the Hawks 37-8 in 2019.

Danville comes into the season with some momentum from the past season’s trip to the playoffs. The Hawks return seven starters on offense and two on defense.

The Hawks averaged 23.5 points per game on offense while giving up 33.7.

Brewer leads the all-time series 4-3.

Aug. 28 vs. Priceville

Brewer welcomes the Priceville Bulldogs to James Tucker Stadium in Week One of the 2020 season.

The Patriots led for most of the game this past season before falling 20-16. The Bulldogs return all-state running back Jerry Burton and second-team all-state tackle Tyler Cappi.

The Bulldogs averaged 29.7 points per game on offense while giving up 27.3.

Brewer leads the all-time series 7-3.

Sept. 4 at Ardmore

Brewer travels to Ardmore to open region play against the Tigers. The Patriots defeated Ardmore 24-17 for Brewer’s only region win last season. Ardmore finished 2-8 last season and winless in Region 8 play. The Tigers averaged 15 points per game on offense but gave up 33.5 points per game defensively.

Brewer leads the all-time series 2-0.

Sept. 11 at Russellville

The Patriots go to Russellville in Week Four to face the Golden Tigers. Russellville finished third in Region 7 this past season with an 8-3 record. The Golden Tigers lost to Scottsboro in the first round of the playoffs.

Russellville averaged 25.5 points per game last season on offense and allowed 13.4 points per game.

Brooks leads the all-time series 4-0.

Sept. 18 vs. East Limestone

Brewer returns home for three straight games starting with the East Limestone Indians. The Indians defeated the Patriots 30-21 last year. East Limestone averaged 25.6 points per game on offense while allowing 26.6 last year.

East Limestone leads the all-time series 2-0.

Sept. 25 vs. Arab

Brewer hosts Arab for the 39th meeting between the two schools. The series is the longest-running rivalry for the Patriots, who defeated the Knights 29-21 last season to give the Patriots a three-game win streak in the series.

The Knights averaged 40.6 points per game last season while giving up 31.6 points per game.

Arab leads the all-time series 25-13.

Oct. 2 vs. Lee

Brewer welcomes Lee-Huntsville to James Tucker Stadium for a Week Six region matchup. The Generals are one of two region teams moving down from Class 6A following AHSAA’s reclassification in the fall.

Lee finished last in 6A Region 8 with a 1-9 record last year. The Generals averaged 13 points per game last season while allowing 39.1 points.

Lee leads the all-time series 7-1.

Oct. 9 at Mae Jemison

Brewer travels to Huntsville for a region matchup with the Mae Jemison Jaguars, who move to 5A Region 8 from 6A Region 8. The Jaguars finished second in 6A Region 8 with a 5-6 record. They lost to Cullman in the first round of the playoffs.

Mae Jemison averaged 23.9 points per game while giving up 21.9 last season.

Oct. 16 vs. Fairview

Brewer hosts the Fairview Aggies for the final home game of the 2020 season. The game will be the first meeting between teams since 2005.
