Council tables event permit for Depot Days, annual event postponed

The Hartselle City Council tonight tabled a special event permit that would have allowed the 40th annual Depot Days festival to be held on its scheduled date.

Missy Evans, executive director of the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce, addressed the council at tonight’s regular meeting to request the special event permit be granted.

“We are willing to work under the city’s guidelines and also do our best to be able to follow the guidelines of (the State of) Alabama,” Evans said. “We have seen other communities do this and do it successfully.”

Council president Kenny Thompson said the police and fire departments had concerns about the event being held as planned and asked, on behalf of the council, if the Chamber would postpone the event “a month to six weeks.”

Evans said there was willingness on the part of the HACC and she would discuss with her board of directors, after which time a new date for the event, originally scheduled for Sept. 19, will be held. Due to funding the the timing of other events scheduled into the spring of 2021,  Evans requested that the event remain a fall event, instead of being pushed to next year.
