Report of burglary ends in arrest

Special to the Enquirer

An alleged burglary came to a decisive end when Morgan County Sheriff’s deputies were able to respond to the scene before the suspect made his escape.

Morgan County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a burglary in progress in the Cotaco area of Morgan County after Morgan County 911 was notified of a suspicious vehicle pulling in behind a residence by an alert member of the community.

According to the report, as deputies arrived on scene, a male was exiting the back door wearing yellow rubber cleaning gloves. As the subject, later identified as Stephen Foster McWhorter, 36, of Arab, attempted to remove his gloves, he looked up and realized he was face to face with a deputy sheriff – and, as the MCSO put it, would not be completing his “cleaning” of the residence.

According to deputies, McWhorter surrendered and was detained until Morgan County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrived on scene for further investigation.

McWhorter was arrested for burglary, third degree, and transported to the Morgan County Jail. Bond was set at $2,500.

“This was great team work,” noted Chief Deputy Alan Host, between the community staying alert and quick action by Morgan County 911 and the sheriff’s office.”
