Books of the Week June 15 – 19
Title: “What is LEGO?”
Author: Jim O’Connor
Grade level: third through sixth
This is one of our newest books in the popular “What is/What are” series. These books are well written and enjoyable even for adults.
“What is LEGO?” gives the history of LEGOs and explains how these wonderful toys became so popular. This would be an excellent book to use as a project book report.
Title: “The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper”
Author: Hallie Rubenhold
This nonfiction book is a fascinating look at Jack the Ripper’s victims.
At the time, newspapers perpetuated the idea that “the Ripper” preyed on prostitutes – not that it made his crimes any less heinous. According to author and historian Hallie Rubenhold, these women came from many walks of life.
They suffered tragedy, poverty and homelessness and, in the end, died because they were women in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Ms. Rubenhold turns the focus from Jack the Ripper to the women whose lives he destroyed and who deserve to be known for themselves instead of being nameless victims of Jack the Ripper.
