Police arrest Walmart thief

Police investigator Tania Burgess May 2 arrested Joseph Gatto, 64, of Hartselle, for theft of property, third degree. Bond was set at $1,000.
According to police, the arrest was the result of Walmart’s loss prevention officer reporting the theft of merchandise from the store. Officers arrived and identified the suspect as Joseph Gatto.
Gatto had allegedly utilized the self-checkout to scan merchandise he previously placed inside his shopping cart. Police report instead of scanning the merchandise, Gatto was actually scanning barcodes removed from canned vegetables.
