Prep Basketball Scorebook: Melson’s 36 not enough as Danville falls to West Morgan

DANVILLE – The Hawks, who were playing without Wren Cole for the third consecutive game, fell to West Morgan 73-61.

The loss came in spite of KJ Melson scoring a game-high 36 points to lead the Hawks. He finished with six 3-pointers and was six of seven from the free-throw line.

The Rebels led 35-38 at halftime. They closed the game by outscoring Danville 23-17 in the fourth.

Witten Morgan had eight for Danville (14-6, 3-3) while Kohl Randolph added six and Dylan Parker finished with five.

West Morgan (12-10, 2-3) was led by Carson Muse, who finished with 25 points. Ashton Owens had 12 and Skyler Hutto added 10.

Girls

Priceville 58, St. John Paul II 21: The 4A #4 Lady Bulldogs clinched the 4A Area 13 regular-season championship with their victory over St. John Paul II.

Jenna Walker led Priceville (14-8, 5-0) with 16 points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals. She was one of eleven players scoring for Priceville.

Olive Gann had nine points for the Lady Bulldogs while Olivia Duran finished with eight points. Abigail Garrison pulled down eight rebounds for Priceville.

Stephanie Andrzewjeski finished with eight points to lead St. John Paul II (12-8, 4-2). The Lady Falcons entered the game with a six-game winning streak.

UP NEXT: Priceville, #2 seed in the Morgan County Tournament, awaits the winner of the Brewer-West Morgan game on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

Brewer 52, Guntersville 19: Brewer opened the game holding Guntersville to only four points in the first quarter. They closed the game by shutting out the Lady Wildcats.

Brewer (15-8, 5-1) was led by Hope West, who finished with 13 points, while Evaiah Burrows added 11.

Abigail Gaston had six points for Guntersville (5-18, 1-5).

UP NEXT: Brewer, #3 seed in the Morgan County Tournament, will play West Morgan, the #6 seed, on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

Danville 49, West Morgan 26: Danville outscored West Morgan 30-8 in the second half to break open a tightly contested game at the half.

The Hawks lead was only one, 19-18, at halftime.

Danville was led by Emma Broadfoot, who had 20 points, while Lauren Hames finished with 10.

West Morgan was led by  Brylynn Bolan who had 11 points.

UP NEXT: Danville, #5 seed in the Morgan County Tournament, will meet #4 seed Hartselle on Monday at 6:30 pm.

Falkville 53, Vinemont 34: The Lady Blue Devils bounced back from their seven-point loss to Decatur Heritage on Thursday night with a win over Vinemont.

Falkville (16-6) was led by  Sydnee Fitzgerald, who just missed a double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds for Falkville. Makenzie Veal scored 14 points, while Savannah Fowler had added six points and eight rebounds.

UP NEXT: Falkville, #1 seed in the Morgan County Tournament, will meet the winner of Hartselle and Danville on Thursday at 6:30 pm.
