Brewer falls to West Morgan in 57-54 shootout

Brewer traveled to Trinity Friday night for a match-up against county foe West Morgan.

The Patriots were coming off a heart-wrenching 27-21 loss to Madison County. The Tigers defense held off the Brewer offense with a goal-line stand to end the game last week.

Brewer again came out on the losing end of a 57-54 game on a night when the home-standing Rebels made a couple more plays on defense to lead to a victory.

The Patriots and Rebels combined for more than 900 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns at Rebels Stadium in one of the more exciting games of the 2019 season.

The Rebels used three explosive plays in the second half to secure the victory over Brewer. With the game tied at 27-27 early in the third quarter, the Rebels scored on runs of 80 yards and 62 yards in consecutive possessions to take a 14-point lead.

The Patriots would once again battle back from a 14-point deficit, as they did late in the first half. This time the Patriots would score on a 43-yard pass from Wyatt Styles to Kris Bramlett and then on a Jonathan Morgan 25-yard run to tie the game at 41-41.

Brewer was looking to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, having driven deep into Rebel territory following a West Morgan turnover.

That’s when the Rebels’ Caleb Terry picked off a Styles pass and returned it 92 yards for a West Morgan touchdown and a 49-41 lead.

The Patriots answered back with a touchdown drive of their own minutes later. Morgan scored his fourth touchdown of the game to make the score 49-47.

Down two, Brewer would attempt to go for two to tie the game, but Morgan was denied getting into the end zone by the Rebels defense.

West Morgan extend its lead to 10 points on a 19-yard scoring run and a two-point conversion to make the score 57-47.

Brewer came right back and got another Morgan touchdown run, this time from three yards out, to make the score 57-54 with just more than two minutes to go.

West Morgan would then recover the ensuing Brewer on-side kick and run out the clock for the victory.

Brewer finished the game with 535 yards of total offense. Morgan led the Patriots’ offense with 268 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 27 carries, while Styles finished with 191 yards passing and a touchdown.

The Rebels were led by Adam Lucas, who had 180 yards rushing on 18 carries and two touchdowns, while quarterback Glavine Segars finished with 174 yards and four touchdowns.

Brewer (2-3) will now jump back into region play, hosting Ardmore (2-3) Friday night.
