Hartselle volleyball finishes runner-up in Pirates Invitational

Hartselle traveled to Boaz Saturday to participate in the Pirate Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The 6A No. 3 Lady Tigers were one of eight ranked teams in the 20-team field that included 6A No. 2 Spanish Fort and No. 4 Albertville, along with 5A No. 8 Lawrence County and No. 9 Southside-Gadsden.

Hartselle rolled through pool play without losing a set, defeating Ramsay 2-0 with scores of 25-17 and 25-15, Crossville 2-0 with scores of 25-22 and 25-13 and DAR 2-0 with scores of 25-5 and 25-12.

In the first round of the Gold Bracket, the Lady Tigers defeated 3A No. 3 Geraldine 25-8 and 25-15 to advance to the semifinals.

Hartselle met No. 4 Albertville with a berth in the championship match on the line. The Aggies won the first set 25-23 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Lady Tigers battled back to win the second set 25-10 and then take the third by a 15-9 score to win the match 2-1.

In the finals, Hartselle fell to No. 2 Spanish Fort in straight sets, 25-18 and 25-16.

Hartselle was led by Grace Leighton, who had 112 assists and 25 digs, while Hailey Holshouser added 79 digs and 47 kills. Lillyanna Cartee added 41 kills and 36 digs to go with the 60 digs from Tori Hughes.

The Lady Tigers’ record is now 41-7 as they head into the county tournament this week at Decatur Heritage.
