Cain and Abel

By Todd Barrier

If you are a Christian, you have heard the story of Cain and Abel many times.

The story centers on Cain murdering his brother Abel because God accepted Abel’s sacrifice but not Cain’s. When we look at the story, that’s what most of us remember – but there is so much more to learn.

Here are a few lessons that might help us in our walk with God.

In Genesis 4:1-2, we see we are all the same. There is a common denominator: We all came from God, and we all fall under His authority. We can look back at Genesis 1 and 2 and understand this by the creation.

In verses 3-5, we see there is a wrong and a right way. From reading the Bible, we can gather both Cain and Abel knew what was expected of them, yet only one did that.

God was pleased with Abel, but God did not respect Cain’s offering. Hence, in God’s eyes, we can’t do whatever we please. There is right and wrong.

From the second part of verse 5 through verse 8, we see there are bad reactions to disappointment; Cain is the prime example of this.

In these same verses, we can understand we control our own actions. Cain would not get over his disappointment and made a terrible decision.

In verses 8-16 we see that our actions have consequences – a fact we sometimes forget when making quick decisions or emotional ones that can lead to a lifetime of heartache.

There is a right way and a wrong way, and consequences come from either one. Our prayer today is that each one of us chooses the path that leads to eternal life.

We look forward to seeing you Sunday!
