Brewer starts season with victory over Danville

The Brewer Patriots started their 2019 season with a 37-8 victory over the visiting Danville Hawks at James Tucker Stadium Friday night.

Brewer got on the board first following a Danville three-and-out. On the drive, the Patriots used a fourth-down conversation to propel them to a score.

Jonathan Morgan scored from three yards out and then added a two-point conversion to give Brewer an 8-0 lead.

Brewer added to that lead right before the end of the first quarter, as QB Patrick Johnson scored on an 18-yard run. Following a two-point conversion, the Patriots led 16-0.

The Patriots came out in the second half and put the Hawks away using three long scoring drives to build their lead to 37-2.

The first scoring drive of the half was highlighted by a 28-yard scoring pass from Johnson to Devin Weathers to give Brewer a 23-2 lead.

Johnson and Weathers each added touchdown runs to extend the Patriots’ lead.

The Hawks scored their only touchdown of the night on a 48-yard run by quarterback Luke Nail with less than three minutes to go in the game.

Brewer’s offense gained 390 yards in the game using a balanced attack. The Patriots had 212 yards passing to go with 178 yards rushing.

Danville rolled up 205 rushing yards but was held to less than 15 yards passing.

Stars of the night

Brewer’s Johnson finished 10 of 12 for 212 yards and a touchdown and had 75 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns.

Danville’s Cameron Moore had 94 yards rushing on 20 carries.
