Marilyn Ruth (Steele) Ballentine

Hartselle

Marilyn Ballentine was born to her parents George Milton and Ruth Evangeline (Moody) Steele in Manhattan, Kansas, June 13, 1938.

Marilyn spent most of her childhood years in Manhattan, where she went to high school through her junior year and was a cheerleader. Her family then moved to Emporia, Kansas, where she met her soulmate Larry Joe Ballentine, who at the time was a football player at Emporia High School.

It really was a match made in heaven. While Larry was attending Kansas State University (B.S.E.E), they were married Dec. 27, 1959. In 1962 and 1964, Marilyn gave birth to her son Todd and daughter Cynthia, respectively. She was a wonderful mom and later grandmother to four grandchildren.

Marilyn always stressed the importance of Christian faith to her children. During her life, she valued the freedom she had to worship at the Lutheran churches she attended.

Marilyn helped start the ministry at the Lutheran church in Hartselle, Christ Our Redeemer. She and her husband Larry cherished their church, and their involvement expressed their love they had for the opportunity to spread the message of Jesus’ love to others.

During her later years, Marilyn served as a caretaker to her husband Larry, who passed away to ALS in 2014, and soon after she survived a battle with breast cancer. She was then reunited with her sister, Sherry Owen, who lived with Marilyn and was crucial to her success with overcoming her health challenges.

July 27 she lost her daughter Cyndi to a massive stroke. Subsequently, Marilyn was relieved of her grief by the Lord, who took her to heaven to be with her husband Larry, daughter Cyndi, grandson Charles Peebles and sister Joyce (Steele) Downer July 30.

Marilyn is survived by her son Todd, daughter-in-law Laura Ballentine, son-in-law Mike Peebles, brother Joseph Steele, two sisters Sherry (Steele) Owen and Delores Steele and three grandchildren, Emily (Ballentine) Garza, Christopher Ballentine and Anna Peebles.

A memorial service for Marilyn Steele Ballentine, 81, was held Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. at Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor John H. Ninke and Pastor Bernard Ansorge officiating.
